Hostinger, a web hosting provider, recently announced in a blog post that it has reset the login passwords of 14 million users as a “precautionary measure” following an unauthorized party accessing one of its servers, obtaining further access to customer information. The incident, which took place on August 23, enabled a third party to access usernames, hashed passwords, and IP addresses, among other information.
Because bad actors could leverage the data obtained from this incident, it serves as an important reminder to always use unique passwords for each online account and be proactive about your cyber hygiene by updating your passwords regularly.
Financial data and websites have not been impacted in any way, the company says. Payment for Hostinger services is done through a third-party provider and an internal investigation found that data regarding websites, domains, hosted emails "remained untouched and unaffected."
